Safety Notes
  • ⚠️Very long duration — requires a full day with no obligations
  • ⚠️Severe nausea and vomiting extremely common, especially from raw plant material
  • ⚠️Cardiovascular strain — elevated heart rate and blood pressure
  • ⚠️Peyote is a federally protected endangered species — non-indigenous use raises serious ethical and ecological concerns
  • ⚠️San Pedro cactus (also containing mescaline) is a more ethical and legal alternative for most people
🌿 Traditional Use

Used ceremonially for over 5,700 years by indigenous peoples of Mexico and the American Southwest — among the longest documented psychedelic traditions on Earth. Central sacrament of the Native American Church (NAC). The Huichol (Wixáritari) people make annual pilgrimages to collect peyote in their sacred homeland, Wirikuta, walking hundreds of miles.

🔬 Research Status

Limited modern clinical research due to Schedule I status and cultural sensitivity around an endangered indigenous-sacred plant. Growing scientific interest in synthetic mescaline as a longer-acting, gentler therapeutic alternative to psilocybin.

⚖️ Legal Status

Schedule I in the US with explicit religious exemption for Native American Church members. Legal for indigenous ceremonial use in Mexico. San Pedro cactus legal to grow ornamentally in most US states.
